Palmers Yard Housing

A collection of eight flats & maisonettes and a new office workspace arranged around a south-facing landscaped courtyard in Tufnell Park. The form, layout and massing of the proposal creates a distinctive sense of place that relates to the surrounding streetscape and neighbouring buildings, and provides comfortable, generous homes to live in.

The scheme takes cues from the existing urban grain, with the new courtyard a continuation of the mews spaces that serve commercial buildings on Junction Road. A narrow four storey element at the north has an opening through into the courtyard at ground level where it faces the mews opposite.

New housing is positioned to the north and east of the site, to allow long south & west facing views from all upper level rooms over the courtyard. The stepped form of the upper floor maisonettes maintains daylight into neighbouring properties and protects the amenity of existing and new residents.

All new homes are accessed from the shared courtyard. The hard landscaped semi- private space has planting growing up the revealed masonry wall of the existing pub hall and planters for communal fruit and vegetable growing. There is access to a communal bin store and secure cycle storage. Mature trees replace the existing tree on the site.
