High Views Beach House
The extension and extensive re-modelling of an existing stone clad 1970’s bungalow near Bridport in Dorset. After review of options the decision was taken to retain the existing slab and foundations and to rebuild on the existing footprint. External materials are as existing where they face the street (stone faced walls, red tiled roof) and the eaves line retained, so alterations are almost imperceptible to neighbours. The dramatic changes to this modest, tardis-like house are only revealed once inside the front door.
The roof ridge was raised by 600mm and two bold zinc clad dormers added to the rear, giving space for two new upper floor bedrooms, bathrooms and a mezzanine, all with dramatic sea views. The ground floor was completely re-planned: a relocated entrance and top-lit hall containing the new stair lead into a large kitchen and interconnected living spaces, arranged across the full width of the house facing the garden. Exposed ceiling joists and the mezzanine, overlooking a double height living space combine to provide an unexpected sense of volume.
Large, economic glazed sliding doors open out into the garden and a poured concrete floor, full height timber doors and timber lined walls link the ground floor spaces. Heating with ASHP, a MVHR system and highly insulated external walls, floor & roof all combine to make the house highly sustainable and keep energy use to a minimum.
