This mansion block in West London is a substantial block located within the Kensington Palace Conservation Area. It was designed by architects H.F Murrell & P.M Pigott. Our proposals for new floors at roof level are part of a thoughtful reworking of the building that will add six new apartments in a mix of sizes, including family homes, all with external amenity space.

The proposed form, massing and materiality of the scheme are based on imaginative analysis and reinterpretation of the distinctive 1930’s building.  The side wings of the U shaped building will be extended over two floors, whilst the taller central body of the building will have a single additional floor.  The new 9th floor ‘roof’ level extends the existing tile clad roof below in a gambrel profile - where the pitch of the upper roof level is shallower than that of the floor below - a form associated with Dutch barns - notably with several Amsterdam school buildings of the same era.  Both floors will be clad in a distinctive green glazed tile, also redolent of the period. Large dormers pick up on the rhythm of the fenestration and give long clear out over Kensington. 

The scheme is being developed in tandem with Airspace, a delivery and construction company who specialise in offsite prefabricated methods that minimise disruption for existing residents.  It will bring significant benefits to the existing building including reduced carbon emissions, PV panels, a better insulated green roof together with landscape and fire safety upgrades, and new lift. Our proposals received enthusiastic support from officers at pre-app stage.
