RIBA Greener London
We worked with two Y4 classes at Heronsgate Primary School, Thamesmead to design a new external classroom. We led a series of workshops in which children analysed their site, wrote a brief, and made drawings and 3D models of their proposed schemes. In the final workshop we combined ideas from several schemes and built a full-size prototype, engaging all children in the making process. BHA and pupils sourced free recycled materials and put the strucutre together, using simple tools and construction techniques. The prototype took the form of three tree structures, built from cardboard tubes and garden canes, which supported a sunshade canopy made from discarded builder’s netting and bubble wrap. The canopy was decorated with 'leaves' cut from carrier bags, each bearing an environmental promise from the children. The project was displayed at the RIBA, where it received best in show, and led to a commission from the school to develop a permanent outdoor classroom.
