The refurbishment and reconfiguration of an existing small commercial building to form a new Italian restaurant for the Giacobazzi family. The interior spaces – entrance, dining spaces, kitchen and WCs - all reconfigured to increase the number of covers and provide the family-run restaurant with a distinctive unique character.

At first floor we opened up the roof to maximise the volume of the space, with timber-strip lining to provide excellent acoustics. A new rooflight floods the room with daylight and allows natural ventilation.  At ground floor, new flooring, lighting a purpose designed bar and built-in timber bench seating provide character, storage and space for increased covers.

Externally, enlarged windows are set into dark timber reveals with solid panels providing natural ventilation.  Large areas of uninterrupted glazing give clear views in and out and connect both dining space and the kitchen with the busy street.  Terracotta washed render unifies the modern external brickwork, references the restaurant’s Italian origins and reinforces its Italian identity.
