New Lecture Theatre, Worcester College
A new lecture theatre, café/restaurant and college kitchens for Worcester College, Oxford. The confined, very sensitive site encompasses a narrow strip of land between two existing Grade I listed college buildings. The structure and form of the proposed new building is a direct response to the varied and complex constraints of the site and brief.
The proposed new stone-clad building sits effortlessly between its neighbours. The generous new top-lit lecture theatre is designed with excellent sight lines and acoustics, and occupies a distinctive roof space. Its upper level cantilevers over a simple glazed entrance that faces onto the college gardens.
Underpinning our proposals is the idea of a sequence of connected public and back of house spaces that extend and form new internal and external routes through the college site. These new routes and spaces embed the new building into the college fabric and landscape.
