St Peter's Eaton Square

We carried out a feasibility study and options appraisal for alterations to this 19C Grade I listed neo-classical church in Central London, and were subsequently appointed to provide full architectural services to remodel the crypt. The aim was to maintain and improve the listed building fabric, expand facilities for the church and local community, and to provide income to the church.

Our scheme proposed new community and meeting rooms on upper floors and the remodelling of the crypt into two separate parts to form a nursery and a private members gym.  The new gym required a variety of highly serviced spaces, including a generous reception, three fitness studios, showers / WC changing rooms, individual treatment/therapy rooms, a staff kitchen, storage and plant space.

The design is underpinned by an understanding of the significance of the historic structure of the crypt. Modern interventions were stripped out and the space carefully planned to reveal the distinctive barrel vaults.  New services are concealed below a new raised sprung floor and above floating suspended ceilings that allow the curved vaulted structure to continue above to be clearly read.

Work involved detailed negotiations with English Heritage, LA conservation officers and the church PCC. We provided full tender and construction information and administered the contract on site to completion.
