Buddy Haward studied architecture at Manchester University and at the Polytechnic of Central London. He gained much of his architectural experience with Michael Hopkins & Partners where he worked for several years on a range of internationally acclaimed, innovative and award-winning cultural, commercial, and educational projects. In 1998 he left Hopkins to concentrate on his own work, forming Burd Haward Marston Architects with Catherine Burd and Lucy Marston, reformed as Burd Haward Architects in 2004.

Alongside his work in private practice, in the last five years Buddy has designed and built his own house, renovated a fishing boat, and spent six months travelling with Catherine and their two young daughters. He has taught and been a guest critic at a range of architecture schools, including Westminster, UCL and Liverpool. In 2005 he was invited by Hopkins Architects to act as Design Consultant on their competition entry for the British Antarctic Survey research HQ at Antarctica.
