Catherine Burd and Buddy Haward set up in practice ten years ago after training together and having worked as senior architects with respected British practices. In 2005 we were selected as part of '40 under 40', a competition showcasing the best of current young British architectural talent. As part of this our work was exhibited at the V&A, and subsequently around Britain, in a major touring exhibition. Our designs have gained critical acclaim for their conceptual clarity, refreshing simplicity and innovative use of materials.
We have worked on and built a diverse range of project types - award winning housing, schools, commercial developments, art galleries and public spaces. In 2007 the practice had wins in two major urban design/housing competitions, one in Northampton (Upton sites F&G with HTA/Bellway Homes) and the other a 600 home development in Rochester (Rochester Riverside with HTA, Crest Nicholson & BioRegional Quintain).
Each project evolves out of a precise, inventive response to a particular set of conditions - site, budget, programme and user. With the enormous number of possibilities inherent in any project, we see our role as creative and judicious editors, using critical strategies to negotiate and develop a route to an elegant and buildable solution, with clarity of idea and purpose legible in the finished result.
We enjoy working with enlightened clients and other construction professionals, and have built up close working relationships with consultants drawn from a range of respected practices. We are currently based in offices in Primrose Hill.
