Burd Haward Architects are an award-winning architectural practice founded by Catherine Burd and Buddy Haward in 1998, based in Camden. The practice was selected as one of 40-under-40 emerging young practices in 2005, and has since won critical acclaim for its housing, cultural and educational buildings.
Although each of our projects is bespoke, our buildings can be characterised by their structural simplicity and inventiveness, legible layouts, bold forms, careful, reductive detailing, and innovative use of everyday self-finished materials. Low energy, sustainable principles underpin all of our work. Our buildings have good acoustics, and maximise use of natural light and ventilation. We enjoy working with enlightened clients and other construction professionals, and have built up close working relationships with consultants drawn from a range of respected practices. As well as leading the practice, both directors champion design quality in the profession. Buddy lectures on sustainability and low energy design and is a Civic Trust Awards assessor. Catherine is a member of Design Council CABE's National Design Review panel, an RIBA Awards & Competitions Assessor, and has taught and lectured widely. This expertise informs the work of the practice. Click on photos above for the partners' full CVs.
